Strategies for Improving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Transportation Planning Profession

This study is funded by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences, and conducted by Canete Medina Consulting Group. We need your input on the best strategies for state departments of transportation (DOT), metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), and other public agencies to increase and sustain diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in their transportation planning staff. Who should complete this survey?

All transportation planning professionalsQuestion Mark IconStudy participants need not have a degree in transportation planning, often transportation planners have degrees in transportation, urban planning, public administration, civil engineering, architecture, or other related fields. Those who work in transportation planning also may not necessarily have the title ‘transportation planners.’ What we are looking for are participants who see themselves as having expertise in transportation planning meaning knowledge of highway systems, land use, transit, and bike/ped issues, among other skills. over 18 years old who currently work or previously worked for a public agency within the last 5 years are invited to take the survey. Respondents may not be working in a public agency now, but have worked in a public agencyQuestion Mark IconExamples of public agencies include state departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, city, county, tribal, state, or federal agencies. in the last 5 years.

The results from this survey will guide development of resources to promote diverse and inclusive environments where transportation planners work. They will be shared in reports, scholarly publications, webinars, and conference sessions.

Participation in this survey is voluntary and should take approximately 5 minutes. You may choose to not answer any survey question(s). Individual responses and personally identifiable data will be kept confidential.

The survey has four sections with 11 questions related to the following:

  1. Your perspectives on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in your current workplace
  2. Your perspectives on the efforts of your agency to incorporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the workplace
  3. Your current job and professional background
  4. Your demographic and personal characteristics
